Manage water and approvals
Added roof area changes stormwater flow. Setbacks, size and connection method can also affect certification and engineering needs.
Measure movement, not just parking bays
Mark the proposed posts on the driveway and test door opening, reversing and pedestrian access. Allow for mirrors, roof racks, trailers and future vehicle changes. A bay that looks adequate on a plan can feel restrictive in daily use.
Where the driveway slopes, check roof clearance at the highest point of the vehicle’s path. Downpipes and bracing should not create pinch points near doors or turning areas.
Connection and drainage details
Matching an existing roof pitch can look integrated, but it is not always structurally or hydraulically appropriate. An independently supported skillion may be simpler in some situations. The existing fascia alone should not be assumed to carry new loads.
More roof area means more stormwater. The design must account for gutters, outlets and where water can legally and practically discharge without concentrating flow beside footings or neighbours.
Prepare a quote-ready brief
Provide driveway measurements, photos from the street and house, the number and type of vehicles, preferred roofing and whether lights or charging will be added later. Mention known easements, services or boundary constraints.
